Online learning differs in many ways from a brick and mortar college setting. With so much of our lives already taking place on our computers and on the web, it is no surprise how popular online learning has become. Online education offers a more flexible and customizable learning experience for students looking to gain a degree in a non-traditional setting. While there are many advantages and luxuries associated with online education, there are also many missteps students can take in their online learning process. Online classes are typically completed at a student’s home. For this reason, it is essential that online students designate a study space for themselves. Your learning environment plays a huge role in how successful your learning experience is. Follow these three tips to create a successful online learning environment.
Find a Distraction-Free Zone
The first step in creating a successful study space as an online student is finding an area that is conducive to focusing and learning. You should find a space in your home that is quiet and away from distraction. Though many of us are tempted to do our while sitting on our beds, in front of the television, or at the dining room table, these are obviously not the best choices for study spaces. You want to find a place that gets very little foot traffic and is void of distraction. Do not set up shop in a busy area of your home like the living room or near the kitchen. Also, you should try to stay away from unnecessary distractions that might be in the room you want to study in. Do not study near a radio, television, or main meeting area. While a dedicated study may not be an option for all of us, you should at least try to find a space or corner that is unoccupied and quiet.
Study in the Same Area Every Time
It is important that you designate a space to study in and stick to that space. You should enter your study area and feel ready to think and concentrate. It is important that you work in the same space every time you work at home, so that your mind and body begin to associate that area with working and thinking. For this reason, you should not choose a space that has multiple functions. The dining room table can look like a wonderful study space, but it is meant for eating and that is what your mind and body associate that space with.
Create a Successful Virtual Space
Though it often goes overlooked, your computer space is part of the environment in which you study as an online student. For this reason, you should be sure to create the most successful space on your computer for your learning purposes. Be sure to do regular maintenance on your computer and other devices, so that you can use them to their fullest ability. Also, you should be careful to backup all of your files and documents. There is nothing more devastating and frustrating than losing your hard work because of a technical error. Backup your things to an external hard drive or a cloud file saving system, to be sure not to lose your files. One of the difficulties with online learning is that most of our educational endeavors take place online and, as we all know, the internet is distracting. There is so much to do online that it can be a serious challenge to stay focused. When you are trying to study be sure to stay off of distracting sites like Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, or whatever else you might like to distract yourself with.
